Revising the Narrative of Renewal: Urban Developments in Late Antique and Medieval Rome , 2021

Articulated fifty years ago in accord with the prevailing top-down model of history, the framework is incompatible with more contempo historical approaches that emphasize agency from below. This essay argues for a more distributed model of agency in the making of eleventh-century art. A case study of Santa Maria in Trastevere, reformed in 1065, calls into question the model of a Reform art directed by cardinals. A comparison with cinematic auteur theory questions the concept of a Reformist 'directed art' from another perspective.

This paper demonstrates that liturgical transformation was a two-manner process, in which liturgy was the object as well as the agent of modify. 3 essential factors-the liturgy of the Eucharist, the space of the early Christian basilica, and the local Christian community-are described as they existed in Rome from the quaternary through the ninth centuries. The essay and then takes up the specific example of the Basilica Julii, showing how these three factors interacted in the concrete weather of a particular titular church. The basilica'south early Christian liturgical layout endured until the ninth century, when it was reconfigured by Pope Gregory 4 (827-844) to bring the liturgical sub-spaces upward-to-date. In Pope Gregory's remodeling the original non-hierarchical layout was replaced by one in which celebrants were elevated above the congregation, women were segregated from men, and higher-ranking lay people were accorded places of honor distinct from those of lesser stature. These alterations brought the Basilica Julii in line with the requirements of the 9th-century papal stational liturgy. The stational liturgy was hierarchically organized from the beginning, just distinctions became sharper in the class of the early Middle Ages in accordance with the expansion of papal authorisation and changes in lay society. Increasing hierarchization may take enhanced the transformational power of the Eucharist, or impeded it.

Physically, they exemplify Gianfranco Spagnesi's principle of processual transformation, whereby a building undergoes repeated alterations that preserve the essential character of its original pattern. The processual approach to Roman medieval basilicas can be traced to restorations of the second half of the 15th century, and it has enabled their survival through centuries of changing architectural styles. The surviving buildings are polychronic, harmonized by the processual adherence to their originary form.
